Description:

Organization Overview:

The Nature Conservancy of Canada(NCC) is a leading national land conservation organization committed to protecting our most important natural areas and the species they sustain.  Since 1962, NCC and its supporters have protected more than 15 million hectares of ecologically significant land across Canada. With a central office in Toronto and regional offices across the country, NCC delivers results you can walk on.

Darkwoods is a 63,000 hectare Conservation Area on the shore of Kootenay Lake owned and managed out of the NCC office in Nelson, BC.

Project Overview:

Darkwoods has over 100 km of gravel logging roads and several bridges that require annual maintenance to maintain safe access for the public and forestry activities. The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is seeking equipment rate quotes for various road and bridge maintenance and repairs on the Darkwoods road system between June 1 – October 15, 2026.

Project Objectives:

  1. Address any road maintenance issues to maintain safe public access to Darkwoods
  2. Re-open and prepare industrial roads for forest harvesting
  3. Be available to respond to safety or environmental issues requiring heavy equipment such as washouts, floods, and opening access for fire suppression.

Scope of Work:

The selected proponent will be responsible for:

  1. Maintenance of the Darkwoods road system – clearing slumps, fixing holes, replacing culverts and cleaning ditches as required on the main road system (Porcupine, Jersey, Blazed and Newington roads). The extent and location of repairs will not be known until snow melt and spring freshet has passed. See map below for all roads that may require some maintenance. Initial road clearing and minor repairs to be completed June 1 – July 1 while a schedule for any larger repairs will be developed with NCC once they are identified.
  2. Grade approximately 25 km of road in preparation for forest harvest activities.
  3. Have machines available to respond to emergencies to repair roads in case of washouts or during wildfire season.
